Riverside Market Bag

In the last year or so, my city, and many others across the country, have banned single use plastic bags.  So of course, I used this as another reason to pull out my hooks and yarn.  Let's be real, I'm always looking for an excuse to pull out those hooks and yarn!





I named this bag as a nod to the area of the city I grew up in.  Riverside was a great little area, you guessed it, along the river.  It was one of those neighborhoods where all of the kids were around the same age and spent every night at each others homes.  Some of my best memories are from that area, and the blues and purples in the yarn I chose brought those feeling back for me.

Lets talk about this glorious yarn, shall we?  I went with Lion Brand's Comfy Cotton Blend, which is a worsted weight 50% Cotton 50% Polyester blend.  Polyester has come a long way my friends, and paired with this cotton, it's not only beautiful, but sturdy. 

What you'll need:

• 5mm Hook - I use the Clover Armour hooks, their soft handles are amazing.  
• Approximately 500 yards / 300g (1.5 cakes) Comfy Cotton yarn - or any sturdy worsted weight cotton or cotton blend 
• Tapestry needle
• Measuring tape
• Stitch marker

Gauge:

16 sts x 11 rows in Sc = 4"





Finished Measurements:

With bag laying flat: Not including straps

16.5"x13" (WxH) 

Pattern Notes:

• Pattern is worked from the bottom up and is seamless.
• Repeat stitches between * * 
• Stitch counts will appear between ( ) at the end of each row 
• When working the two row repeat
• Ch  3 at the beginning of even rows counts as a Dc
• Ch 6 at the beginning of odd rows counts as a Dc and Ch 3

Terms Used:

Sl St:   Slip Stitch

Sc:       Single Crochet

Ch:      Chain

Sp:       Space

Sk:       Skip

Dc:       Double Crochet

St/Sts:  Stitch/Stitches

Pattern:

Bag base

Ch 20

R1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across (19)  Ch 1, turn
R2-R55:  1 sc in each St (19) Ch 1, turn
R56:  1 sc in each st (19) - Do Not Chain, Do not Turn.

If you didn't do a gauge swatch in the beginning, now is a good time to bust out the measuring tape and give it a quick check.

The base of your bag should measure  12.5" x 5"

We will now begin to work in the round and build the bag up.

R1: Place a stitch marker at first stitch
Working along the length of the base: place 1 sc in the of each row and in each sc along the width.  

Your first sc will go back into the same space of the last sc from R56

*You should have 150 Sc total at the end of the first row.  19 along the width and 56 along the length*

R2-R5: 1 sc in each st around (150).  Do not ch 1 or turn.  

Work along the length of the bag, placing 1 sc in the end of each row

At the end of R5, Sl St into first stitch of the round.

Your bag base should be starting to turn up at the corners now (this is totally normal and intended)

Body

R1:  Ch 6  (counts as Dc + Ch 3 throughout), sk 3 sts *1 Dc in next two sts, Ch 3, Sk 3 Sts - rep from *, 1 Dc in last st.  Sl St into 3rd ch to join.  Do not turn

R2: Sl St into first Ch 3 space, Ch 3, 4 Dc in same space.  *5 Dc in each ch 3 space - rep from *, Sl St  into 3rd Ch to join.  Do not turn.

Repeat R1 and R2 an additional 7 times  - you should have a total of 16 rows for this section of the bag.  



R17-R21:  Ch 1, 1 sc in each st.  sl st to join (150)

place a st marker in the first st of R21

Snip yarn and weave in ends.




Straps

*Work the straps with the right side (outside of the bag) facing you*

Sk 5 sts from st marker, insert hook at the 6th st.

R1:  1 Sc in next 6 sts, Ch 1, turn (6)

Repeat R1 for 101 rows, or until your strap measures 22"  

Snip yarn leaving tail for sewing

Sk 32 sts, sew strap.

Start the second strap, continuing with the right side of the work facing you

Sk 34 sts from the 1st strap, insert hook at the 35th st.


R1:  1 Sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn (6)

Repeat R1 for 101 rows, or until your strap measures 22"  

Snip yarn leaving tail for sewing

Sk 32 sts, sew strap.


Weave in any ends you have securely.  You will be using this bag to tote around your goods, you don't want to have it come apart on you.
